Hi, newbie here and glad to be a part of the forum.
- I have an 03 Mitsu Montero LTD with 165,000 miles
which jerks or jumps ‘mildly’ when placed on reverse. This is more pronounced when backing up after a long - less than an hour - drive on an inclined surface. On several occasions, it takes a little bit of effort to shift, to D or R like from a overnight park or even statup.
- I don’t feel any slippage or unusual shifting during the drive itself. In fact I feel it is shifting quite perfectly. There is power when accelerating and an appropriate downshifting when slowing down.
- It has other issues, CEL on due ti ‘a small leak’, traction warning lights, on and off are ‘on’ almost immediately after driving away.
- sometimes central diff light turns on just for no reason at all.
- transmission was rebuilt almost 30,000 miles ago.
- With all its problems i love the car and so would certainly be happy if i can resolve first the jerking/jumping issue.
- thank you! And will look forward to your advice.

Traction control is a combination of transmission and speed sensors on your wheels. Turn TC off and see if the jerking goes away. If so you have something wrong in that system. Could be transmission or engine mounts. Bad CV joints. Or your tranny going bad again. Not all rebuilds are equal. I’ve seen some bad ones.
Thanks. I will look more into the traction control problem.
I can turn the traction control on or off but sometime during the drive - could be right away or after several minutes - both lights - on and off - will light up at the same time which probably is a sign that something indeed is wrong in that system.
Yeah, I don’t think its the CV nor the mounts. It is a different kind of jerking, more like a kick, a strong sudden push …maybe one day I can record the movement.
