I have owned my 2004 Toyota Avalon with 134000 miles for a year. I took it to my mechanic for a noisy power steering system. He added fluid and saw evidence of a leak on the top of the left side of the rack. He concluded that I needed a new rack and pinion. I have an appointment soon with an estimate of $900-$1000 including alignment.
I'm satisfied with his diagnosis of the problem but wonder if I can delay the replacement for a while. I've been driving it for a week since then and haven't had to add fluid yet. I can see traces of leaks from both sides on the parking surface.
Would it be safe to keep the reservoir full of fluid and wait for other symptoms to develop before I have the rack replaced? The steering and alignment seem fine to me. I drive no more than 20 miles a week.
Thanks for your expertise. I bought the Avalon for $4000 because of Scotty's opinion of Toyotas.
As long as you have enough fluid in the reservoir, you are fine. Keep your eyes on the leak and if it started dripping fluid on the ground, you may consider replacing the rack.
