Replaced both CV axles (torn boots) & lower ball joints, but noticed immediately after that it was vibrating real bad & that's with both wheels up. Could it be the dreaded shudder that some say can be fixed by draining & filling with Honda CVT transmission fluid or could it be the torque converter or the transmission itself going bad?
I did drain & fill the transmission fluid with Valvoline CVT since I saw an Amazon review that said doing that twice fixed his problem. It didn't shudder after I replaced the fluid, only after I replaced the axles along with the oil pan. I did accidentally overfill it, but I didn't drive it until I drained some & leveled it again (no leaks). Never gotten to drive it a few miles. I don't see how I could even drive it 50 miles, let alone 5 with how hard it shuddered. Replaced the 3 out of 4 engine mounts (since I could only test it after replacing the oil pan, the passenger side was cracked). It did help dampen the vibration a little, but didn't fix the problem. I did drain & fill it again with Honda CVT twice in hopes of being lucky, but no dice. When driving now it would rumble & thump real bad above 2000 rpm that it's not comfortable above 40 mph.
This is the video of it:
For some odd reason, it sounds like a rattling chain on the video. Dunno if the phone's mic picked up the rattling off the dash or the loose plastic shift lever cover, but I swear it feels like the tranny shuddering/rumbling when accelerating over 2000 rpm.
Here's another video where you an hear the clacking near the CV axle at the transmission:
I had my doubts about the axle not being perfectly flush with the transmission so just to make sure, I pulled it out again, inspected the teeth on the axle (no damage) & stuck my finger inside to check for leftover clip or broken teeth inside (nothing). I did feel that the gear inside where the axle connects feels kinda loose, like a slight clicking rocking it back & forth. Is that normal or is it supposed to be solid? This time I used a 4 lb hammer to gently tap the axle back in, but looks exactly the same as before so the tiny gap was normal.
Will something like XADO Revitalizant EX120 Conditioner for Automatic Gearbox & CVT Tiptronic Transmission Oil Treatment Additive still work or do I need a transmission replacement? Thanks.
Well, that stinks! The transmission was working fine before the CV's were installed?
Yup, no rumbling. Only replaced them because the grease was on the driver's side wheel & passenger was about to do the same eventually.
Turns out the transmission was fine. The problem was that the new axles that were supposed to be the right fit, weren't. The new passenger side was longer & even after replacing it with a remanufactured it didn't shake on the road, but was still somewhat shaking when jacked up so I replaced the driver's side with reman as well & acceleration isn't somewhat delayed. Lesson learned: don't blindly trust parts even if they're supposed to be compatible & new.
Thanks for posting back with the fix. Well done!
Well if it didn't roll before but she has to change you got bad shifts and they were installed incorrectly and damaged the transmission
