Hello everyone
My car came from the factory with 15” wheels and last year i change them with 16” and everything went well.
From the beginning i wanted to get 17” but i couldn’t find a good deal on a used ones so i got the 16”.
Now I’m thinking to get the 17” tires and i was wondering if thats gonna cause any issues. I heard that i’d have to reprogram the computer but i don’t know if that’s true.
have anyone already switched from 15” to 17” without any problems?
Thanks
It is always better to stick to factory recommended sizes otherwise it can mess with the geometry and ride quality. A small change is size should be okay though.
lower profile tires will give a harsher ride. You also increase the risk of pinch flats and rim damage.
Cause issues? Yes and no. If overal tire diameter is not changed, … no. If tire width does not change, … no. If selected rim has the same offset, same bolt pattern, same width, … no. What will change as you go up in rim size is height of tire wall. Skinnier the sidewall stiffer the ride, sharper response to steering inputs.
Now, if you wish to go to a wider tire, you must check for a clearance so there is no rubbing against struts, body parts, et. al., as you keep steering left and right and bounce over the potholes and ruts.
Is it worth the effort? Dunno, … that’s up to you: cost, harsher ride, shorter suspension life, reduced efficiency.
Anyway, … if you up to it, go to tirerack.com and "shop” for a wheel-tire combination for your car. You will see raft and raft of combinations. Pick the one you like best, write down all the technical parameters (tire size, wheel size, bolt pattern, rim width, offset, … and go real shopping locally for stuff that matches above collected data.
Good luck,
F.S.
