I stupidly inserted the wrong key into my ignition of my duster and it would not come out.  I tapped the end of it with a screwdriver and was able to pull it out.... However. the key that belongs to my duster will go in but it will not turn.. It will buzz if the door is open but it will not turn to start the car..

I've tried to find step by step instructions on what I had to do to get it to work but couldn't find any real  help.

I'm hoping with all your knowledge you can help me out.

Thank you,

Trish

Well you're going to need to get a new key and ignition lock assembly. Check with that means motor News online they generally get parts for all kinds of old cars.

Have you tried WD40, pliers, wiggling and some unkind words? Those locks get very loose and sloppy after years of use.

New aftermarket ignition locks for that car are still widely available. Do a google search. You will have to pull the steering wheel to replace it. Here is a YouTube video that shows how. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSHSPkNfDCg. With the lock removed you may be able to remove the key somehow.

If you change the ignition lock there will be a different key for the doors and ignition so you might want to change the door locks as well. Not really necessary.

While the steering wheel is apart you should probably replace the plastic turn signal switch because they are prone to braking. Also still widely available.

Good luck. My first car was a 70 Demon, my sister had a Duster like yours. She broke the key off half way in the ignition switch. The front part stayed in there and she used the back half to start the car.

Sorry if the video isn't working. It's on YouTube by Dustyman, titled "How to replace a Mopar ignition lock cylinder.
