1978 Chevy Camaro Backfire at 2000rpm

Topic starter

1978 Camaro z28 5.7L 350 V8 small block Chevy engine. 58,000 miles, automatic.

Been having trouble with a backfiring or popping and banging issue when driving or rev’ing up to 2000rpm (40mph > when driving).

Tried to tune the edelbrock avs2 with the screws located at the front, no change. Also, on a whim, tried to change the vacuum advance that goes into the distributor (as I wasn’t getting a lot of pressure), no change.

Looking to see what other avenues and alternatives I can look into being a fairly new car tinkerer.

Let me know your thoughts and I appreciate you reading.

Was anything done to the engine just prior to the problem developing? Backfiring can be caused by a too lean mixture or ignition timing being out of whack. On 1970s vehicles the crude emission controls would frequently cause problems even when new. Also, the mixture screws on the carb adjust the idle mixture. Is float level OK? Is the carb jetted for your engine?
