Aloha just bought a 1986 Chevy S10, Automatic with 207,000 miles for $650

I am unsure on how to check the trans fluid. The dipstick reads check in park, idling. But when I do shows bearly any in it. But when I turn it off and check it, then it shows full.

  1. Its been shifting fine

So I'm really confused. How do I properly read it, so I don't destroy my new truck.

I really appreciate yals help, thank you 🙂 means a lot

The instructions are plainly given on the dipstick in this case. You could also see the owner's manual for details. Normally the fluid level would be checked at operating temperature though some dipsticks have markings for both cold and hot fluid.

If there is hardly any fluid showing when checked properly then it is grievously low.

The transmission pump fills the transmission with fluid and pressurizes it when it's idling. Some of it drains back to the pan when it's off and the pump stops spinning. Check it when it's idling and at operating temperature, on a flat surface, not when it's cold and off. If you aren't seeing anything under those conditions, you're precariously low on fluid. Find where it's leaking.

And now would be a good time to check for any ATF leaks - ATF doesn't evaporate.

shows bearly any in it.

then you need to add fluid until it's at the correct level, and it wouldn't hurt to check the manual
