Good evening,
I recently bought a 1986 Ford F-150 XL long bed, 302 5.0L, Automatic, 2WD, with 176,000 miles from a guy I know and trust. He kept up on maintence and he bought it from his brother who kept up on maintence. It’s started up every time and has ran great. Since I bought it I haven’t done anything. The cars previous owner said that recently he did a full synthetic oil change and coolant flush. He said it had a stalling issue and he replaced the idle control valve and different sensors and wiring and he said that it didn’t stall after except once and it hasn’t stalled once for me. Also to note he did do a cat delete (just thought I’d add it in, in case it helps)
As for my problem, I drove to work and parked and Pulled the key out of the ignition and there was a terrible squealing noise coming from the engine bay. I popped the hood and the whole alternator belt was going and there was a little smoke that looked like it was coming from a battery terminal but it could have been from somewhere else. After 90 seconds it stopped. When I drove home it squealed all the way home and when I pulled the key out it did the same thing for 90ish seconds.
I thought that maybe it could be carbon buildup that created combustion to drive the belt after I pulled the key out but I haven’t had any misfires previously and it was a sudden onset of this problem. In my ignorant opinion I think that the alternator is drawing from the battery to drive the belt after the car is shut off (idk why it would not just go until the battery is dead though) and also maybe the squealing is from alternator bearings as it seems that the alternator went. Also, because the car is efi perhaps the stalling issue was related to the alternator.
I haven’t found anything as of yet on this problem that helped so all advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Oscar
change the belt
Check to see if the alternator is charging correctly and if the bearings are going out.
