Currently in a restoration project, of a 1987 BMW 325IS. It's turning out well with new decked out interior and sound system. Made sure all wires are proper and all that. It runs and drives fine except for the occasional check engine light that turns on for like 2 minutes and then turns itself off. My problem is that I am not able to scan the car whatsoever. I've tried the stomp test and couldn't get any codes nor does my reader want to read the car saying the vehicle is not found. Any way for me to pick the loom or something else? All gauges work work correctly except for odo, which I know for sure is that my gears stopped turning. I know blinking is misfire but the check engine light is constant only sometimes while test driving. I don't hear any misfire or really anything that sounds off. Just wondering if anyone has run into such a problem before as I'm relatively new to older BMW. Work done so far: head gasket, oil pan gasket, new valve cover, new spark plugs and ignition coils and other fun tidbits with suspension work and all that. New fuel pump and a couple of vacuum lines, retested with smoke test. Clean. If anyone could help that be appreciated.
This could be something to do with the batteries being low on your gauge cluster. From what I understand all sorts of random craziness can happen due to this. This is something you can check with a voltmeter when you replace your odometer gears. I have done this job and it's not that bad.
Thanks for the info, by charging/changing batteries Do you mean the batteries on the si board?
Complex car but unless you have a BMW dealer level scan tool good luck doing any type of serious analysis of electronics and codes. You would have been better going off even earlier to when they still had carburetors on them
Hi scotty, I actually already tried contacting the dealer, crap outta luck, they said I had to go to a classics shop, went there and apparently no luck either. At this point would It just be ECU or some other electrical gremlin?
