Hi I’m going to check out two 1990 Nissan 300zx both are N/A automatic. The first was imported from Canada owner says right side window doesn’t work and that it has a water pump leak, and the engine was replaced on it recently. The second one appears to have no problems and is in running just fine with a clean interior. Both of the cars are listed around the same price of $2500-$2600. Which one seems like a better deal and what should I look out for when inspecting the cars?
Well, the bright side is that the Canadian owner tells you the problem before purchasing it. I would check with the mechanic first and the mileage of both vehicles. The problem with those cars is that the parts are very hard to find. Not only that, you have to change any parts more than the owner said like the oil seals.
I’d like to take it to a mechanic, but the problem is that both of the cars are about 3 hours from where I live. I don’t really know anyone that would be willing to go that far with me just to check the cars out.
@ejtj I guess try to test drive it and see any signs from the engine and transmission.
The second one sounds better. So that's the one I would be MORE cautious of.
A car that old....I'm sure it has items that need to be addressed. The owner of the first car is at least playing straight with you. Keep an eye out for rust, oil leaks, etc. and pay attention to any noises while driving.
I'd shoot for $2000 on either. Parts are scarce and not cheap, so keep that in mind.
What would you say is a deal breaker or something that makes the car a junker?
Transmission or engine problems, any dash lights, a title that is rebuilt/salvage...those are the big ones. Also rust.
