1993 Mustang engine blow-by coming through valve cover breather

Hello everyone, I’m currently looking at buying a 1993 Mustang l.x 5.0 the owner tells me it has blow-by and it’s coming out of the valve cover breather. He also said the sleeve around his spark plug wire had oil on it. The thing is the engine has under 100k miles on it. Just wondering if this is a serious problem and if I should avoid buying this car.

Yeah PASS.

Everyone seems to love going to a breather system, but nobody seems to know how to go about it properly.

Replacing a valve cover gasket isn't a big deal, but the blow-by certainly could be. Don't buy it without doing a compression check, as blow-by often indicates worn out piston rings, which are a big/expensive job. Why isn't his positive crankcase ventilation sucking up the blow-by? Did he remove it and replace it with valve cover breather?

Yes, he replaced it with the valve cover breather.

At least he's honest about the car - but there are too many 90's Mustangs out there to buy one where you can SEE blow-by fumes coming out of the engine. Usually you just smell them.

Thanks you, I appreciate the help.

I'd run away from that one. The engine is likely shot.

Usually, there are two vents.  One has the PVC valve on it running from the valve cover to the intake manifold.  The other usually runs from another location on the valve cover to the air cleaner.  If either of these have been altered, I would walk away from the deal.  The damage from not have the crankcase properly vented can be very expensive.

Okay thank you this helped me a bunch, I’ll definitely walk away from the tell
