Scotty,
A few months ago I bought a 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2.4l RWD. It has 52000 miles on it, and no rust. Garage kept, 1 owner.
I love the truck and expect to get many years out of it but I have two issues.
1. It feels underpowered. Didn't expect much from the 2.4, but I'm wondering if I can squeeze any more power out of the thing without doing something like adding a turbo. The guy I bought it from put slightly larger tires on it (215/75R14) than original (195/75R14). I wonder if reducing the size to original might help a bit. Are there any other ways to increase power some?
2. It vibrates noticibly at idle (e.g. stoplight) such that the rearview is blurry. The motor is idling smoothly. Is this because it is an unbalanced engine? Motor mounts? Should I be concerned?
No trouble codes.
Change the tires could help a bit. I don’t think you can do much more about the power. It is a old 4 cylinder engine and if you want keep the car as long as possible, it is not a good idea to add stress to the engine by modifying it.
about the vibration, start with checking the engine and transmission mounts.
