Hi Scotty. I'm not a car guy and not at all a repair guy. I have a 2000 Accord EX, automatic with 284,411 miles on it. I love the car and it has been going strong with little more than oil changes. I've had to replace the cataleptic converter but that is about the most major thing. I also replaced the plugs and wires about 2 years ago. I've had some bad oil leaks for some time now and just got an estimate for a little over $1000 to have a new timing kit, water pump, valve cover gasket, VVT gasket and alternator belt replaced that they believe will take care of the oil leaks. I believe they also said that they would be adjusting or replacing the valves. Anyway, the real question is... is it worth having the repairs done to a car that is 21 years old and with so many miles. Am I just throwing money away and waiting for the next major thing to go bad or is it really worth it to repair and keep driving. I only drive around town and probably put less than 6,000 miles a year on the car. I love the car and would love to keep it, but just don't know if it really worth it. Thanks for any advice you can provide. RickT
I would get rid of it. Honda's reliability is not stable; it goes back and forth and since your car is at a mere 300k- it's time for a new car.
If you put it up for sale right now, what would be your best offer? If you do sell it, what will you replace it with, and for how much?
Get that information first, and then decide.
If it were a manual, I’d say keep it. I’m still rolling in my 1999 Accord. I did the timing belt etc… my self. It saved me money, but it was a pain in the ass as a non-mechanic. Sometimes I wish I just paid to get it done, other times I am glad I did it myself.
I am 50/50 on the automatics. I’d look into the history of the specific model and year to decide if the chances are high or low the transmission will go out.
