2001 CR-V To Rebuild or Not to Rebuild - That is the question

I have a 2001 CR-V EX that looks great, but does not run, no clue as to what internal engine issue is making a clunking sound. Some say its blown, but no proof was given. I'd hate to junk it, it was a great car, until now. 290K miles, new tires, brakes, distributor, battery, timing belt, water pump all just done. How do I begin to understand what internal malfunction has taken place. BTW, it had no issues, was driven, parked, then would not strart, I thought is was the distributor, as the cap had some mosture in it a, I replaced the cap and rotor, wires, all was well. 2 weeks later It would not start after a very wet 2 weeks. One of the distributor cap screw ears was broken, moist again. so I decided a new distributor was in order, I put it in, and then had this crazy clunk. Took it to (2) places, they all said it was internal engine damage. Crazy, it just ran fine.   After the distributor change, it never started again. Any help, wouild be cool. Did I disconnect the valve train when the new distributor was screwed in? The new distributor was hard to go in. How can I tell, what is broken?  What I do not understand is that it was driven, no problems, parked, had the moisture issue, then its blown up? I'd be fine, if it quit while driving, got hot, and stranded my daughter, but thats not how it failed. Again, any insight would be cool. Peace. She loves this thing, I'd hate to junk it, the stickers are so cool on the back.

If the timing belt is recently replaced, maybe the timing is off?  Look to see if all the tick marks are where they are supposed to be.  Even being off a single tooth can throw it all off.

Same with the distributor.  If the distributor isn't installed in the right direction and orientation, it could throw off the spark plugs.  They could fire out of order.  It might be the distributor since that was the last thing changed.
