Driving around a residential area yestersay I saw a 2001 Honda Civic 4cyl with 72,000 miles for $2200 OBO. Contacted the private seller and he said that he just needs to move it, it belongs to his mother-in-law but she can’t drive anymore. I just need a cheap car to get around town. What’s your initial reaction to this car and that price? Thank you!

It’s automatic transmission.

I assume it has an automatic transmission. If so, that model year is notorious for transmission problems.

Here's a video from Scotty on years to avoid; watch from 9:15; he suggests not buying the 2001 Civic.

But now if it checks out by a mechanic and you can get it for cheap and you don't have any issues with dumping it when it starts having problems then go for it.

Pass at any price because there is no way a 21 year old car has only 72K miles.  Must be at least 172K.  If a mechanic checks it out with a minimum compression test, at that price, why not?
