Hi,

I tried hard to get the bottom bolt of the fuel filter in my 2001 Lancer. It seems a big pain. Any tips?

Thanks

It is possible for the cheap (China made?) filter to be the problem. I had that happen some years ago when I bought a Purolator fuel filter that turned out to be made in China. No matter what I did the thing would just not stop leaking, and I knew I had not stripped threads or anything like that. Another Purolator filter off the same shelf was made in Israel and that one worked with no problems.

However, as Scotty says check that the threads are not damaged.

I am not sure about threads but I think I have rounded the flare nut..AM I screwed? Any tips pls

You should be able to tell if the threads are OK by examination.

If you mean you rounded the head it will be more difficult to tighten and loosen (might even have to use a vise-grip depending how bad) but it should otherwise be OK. If the flare fitting part is messed up then it definitely needs to be replaced.

I'm assuming it's like other fuel filters I've installed where banjo bolts and fittings are used.

I think lower end of the thread of the flare nut is damaged...I may have rest 19mm spanner tool on the thread while tightening the nut using 14mm spanner..WIll I be able to fix the fuel filter? ANy tips will be appreciated...

You'll need to examine the fuel filter threads and the sealing surface where the fitting goes in for damage. If those are messed up then the filter cannot be used.

The flare sitting surface is bit oval now due to washer misaligned and crushed inside

You can't use that, it will never seal properly.

DO you think I should use a washer for the bottom-new filter I bought Wesfill WZ515 seems does not have a bottom washer...It seems to be the same quality as silverline

You should probably use the same washer setup that was there originally.

Tried again with Silver line filter-Leaking again...Got the old filter cleaned using thinner few times....Put back in..No leaks..slightly improved acceleration (specially with A/C ON car seems does not produce enough power to accelerate....Do you think I still need to put a new fuel filter/or is something else the problem/How effective is re-susing the cleaned old fuele fileter?I will all this as a new post...

If it's not leaking you should be OK but I'd keep an eye on it. No need for posting a new topic unless a different problem develops.

What do you think about using a cleaned old fuel filter? Should I replace it with a new one as I can not see a big improvement?

It doesn't make much sense to put a used fuel filter back in after having gone through the work of taking it out. With a new filter you know what you've got and how long it can be expected to last.

The old filter will be about as effective as used toilet paper.

Well often they get rusty and then the threads are shot but before you spend money with a mechanic it might take it apart put Teflon tape on the threads and then try it over again

Well it may be rusted on use a long extension bar in a socket and pray you can get it off sometimes you just have to give up and cut the line off and replace it

Hi,

I tried to replace the fuel filter and the bottom leaking badly. Can it be the cheap filter (Silverline filter) or have I ruined the thread?

Should I try again with a better filter (Ryco fuel filter) or should I tow the car to a mechanic?

Pls advise

Flare sitting of the new silverline filter (Oval now) and the bottom washer, misaligned and damaged ...The old filter seems like below

It has thicker circular sitting-maybe better quality

Hi Scotty,

I have 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8L Auto with 234k kms. Service history said fuel filter was changed 5 years ago...Car was showing some poor acceleration issues...(Like not been reach 60-70 kmph quick enough, sluggish in changing from one speed level to another (not sure if this is a transmission issue)...

I changed spark plugs, cleaned the throttle valve & MAF sensor, replace gasket cover..Only slight improvement...

I tried to replace the fuel filter (with Silverline fuel filter -$10) and the bottom leaking badly. I tried with bottom washer /without washer same result..
Removed and inspected …

Is my car having a transmission issue???

Finally was able to fix a new fuel filter. This time I used a different filter and fix the bottom flare connection loosely first before fixing anything else. Also kept the fuel cap open to reduce fuel pressure. I learnt that when replacing fuel filter need to compare the new one with the one already in the car carefully specially the line connection seating. These needs to be same if to use the same washer setup. I think third washer at the bottom flare nut should be possible, but the alignment should be spot on (which I got all wrong). I used fuel filter which does not comes with bottom washer, this is easier to fix.
