2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with 180,000 miles. Asking price: 6k. My sister needs a car for college and wants a Jeep. Should we go and inspect it? Is it worth the time?

That will have the 4.0 inline six which is a very good engine, but it's 20 years old. Have a mechanic check it out. Be careful about any indication of coolant dripping from the bellhousing area since these engines have core plugs in back of the head and block that require engine or transmission removal to replace.

The automatic transmission is an old-school Chrysler Torqueflite 3-speed unit (design dates to 1960). They are reliable and durable if maintained, check fluid to see if it looks burned or feels gritty.

Jeeps are infamous for electrical problems but the pre-Fiat models are not as bad as what's being sold today.

The $6000 price sounds kind of crazy to me for a 20-year-old vehicle, but the market is nuts right now and Jeeps have always gone for high prices. Frankly I think a Corolla or Civic would be a much better college vehicle but if this is what she wants...

Also be aware that one of these is only going to get about 15 miles per gallon. Not any better on the highway either with that 3-speed transmission and the aerodynamics of a brick.

Looks like that dealer is pretty awful even by the very low standards of used car dealers in general.
