I have a 2004 chevy aveo with 1.6 liter. The crank pulley was loose so I took it off and noticed the gear on the crank had a little keyed area and the key was broken. How do I remove and replace that crank gear. Do I have to replace the whole timing system, or can I just replace that one gear?
Your talking about the crank shaft sprocket. You need to use a specialty tool to remove and install. They sell just the sprocket and you might as well replace timing belt, water pump and tensioner why it apart. Your woodruff key for the crank pulley might be bad. They might have to just be replaced.
What specialty tool are you talking about to remove the crank gear? I can't seem to find any info on removing them or any special tools besides the 41mm water pump tool to remove tension from the belt. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the gear off and replace it. Thank you
It's a pulley puller/ gear puller. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/performance-tool-4-inch-3-jaw-hd-gear-puller-w136p/11244449-P
You just have to find the size that works with your car. But I sent the link so you know what it looks like.
