[Solved] 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Master cylinder or ABS problem?

Hello,

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 131k miles, 4.0l v6, AT.  When stopping I can feel the brake pedal acting funny just before I come to a complete stop.  Normal braking behavior is to reduce pressure on the brake pedal as you get slower to come to a smooth stop.  If I do that I can feel (through the pedal) and hear the ABS doing something, and it reduces the effectiveness of the braking, so I have to apply more pressure to come to a complete stop.  If I maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal, it behaves normally as it comes to a stop, but it is of course a bit more abrupt.  Is this a problem with the ABS system, or is it a problem with the master cylinder causing the ABS to act up?

Thanks

It looked like the ABS system is acting up. Find a good mechanic to diagnose it.

Thanks! That's why I came here 😉

You're welcome. Keep us posted!

One of the front wheel bearings was failing, causing the ABS to act up. Garage replaced front wheel hub. All is well. Thanks!

Thanks for the update. I'm glad it all sorted out.

Well of course if you have any ABS codes look into that first. In a non-ABS system, if you didn't have any leaks that would always be the brake master cylinder going out. But with ABS it gets very complex and unless you have a relatively inexpensive brake master cylinder to change out, have a mechanic check the ABS system

Thank you, Scotty. I can get a remanufactured master for under $40 at autozone, so I may give that a try.
