Hi. I live in Westminster, Colorado and I was thinking about buying a used 2005 Ford Freestyle AWD Limited with 145,000 Miles for commuting short distances in snow and ice from a private party with a clean title and nothing wrong with it so far for 3,000 dollars before taxes and fees.  Do you think it is a good idea and a good car for commuting short distances in snow and ice and how long do you think it will last?

The CVT on that thing is one of the worst ever made. Avoid it - no one knows how to repair it, there are no parts for it and it fails prematurely. (On the five hungered these would fail at about 90k-100k)

besides I wouldn’t recommend a CVT for AWD or short drives.

If it would be a conventional automatic or a manual, it’s be alright but on the US market those are practically non-existent.

Transmission on those are a weak point and being an AWD car, it cost you a fortune to fix. With that said, if your mechanic says it is in a good shape, it can be a decent car especially with that price point.

"Nothing wrong with it so far?"  Seriously, according to whom, the seller?  Run away.
