Hey Scotty. My 2005 Toyota Tundra has an issue. As soon as I crank the ignition, I hear a click and all the electronics die. Lights, radio, everything. I replaced the battery, no change. I don't know what's wrong.
I found out the problem. It was a loose connector.
good stuff.
Connector on ... the ignition?
No. On the battery terminal. Was probably the issue in the first place. When I turned the key to Start, it would kill all the electronics because that created more resistance than it could overcome. Best part is, all my presets were saved. So the old battery might still have been good.
Oh well. It works, that's all that matters.
yeah the poor connection was enough to energize all the low power electronics, but as soon as the starter motor started pulling current the voltage sagged too much. But didn't you re-tighten the terminal when you swapped batteries?
Apparently not. It was the top bolts that were loose that I didn't notice.
Was the old battery bad?
The 17-year-old ignition switch would be a primary suspect.
The battery was 4 years old and wouldn't hold a charge. Would a bad ignition switch kill all the power? If I wait a sec it comes right back with the new battery.
Yes, a bad switch definitely could. It happened to me in fact a few years back.
As soon as I crank the ignition,
I'm a little confused.
Did you mean to say "as soon as I turn the key to start position"?
or do you mean the starter motor actually begins cranking, and then everything dies?
As soon as I turn it to start. Everything immediately dies.
yeah that definitely sounds like a faulty ignition switch.
