Scotty, the check engine light on my 2018 Toyota Tundra came on; I checked it with my home scanner, which came up Catalytic Converter efficiency code. I took it to a repair shop; they replaced the converter; I picked the truck up, and the check engine light came back on right away. I took it back to the shop. After a few weeks they said that the other CC must have been bad too. They replaced that, but the check engine light never would go off. They didn’t know what else to do, so I picked it up and took it to the Toyota Dealership. They said both CCs are bad; I told them they were both new. They said that they have to be replaced with Toyota CCs, which is going to run about $5000, assuming there are no other problems. 25000 miles
At this point is it worth fixing or maybe just getting a trade in?
Thank you and have a great weekend.
Federal Emissions Laws require carmakers to cover the Catalytic Converter(s) and PCM/ECM (powertrain or electronic control module) under warranty for eight years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The problem is I took it to a regular shop not the dealer before hand. Thank you for your comment.
That doesn't matter. Federal Law says that repair shop had to install a catalytic converter that meets OEM requirements of the vehicle its installed on and they must warranty it to meet EPA emission standards for 25,000 miles. Toyota says your aftermarket catalytic converters aren't performing to OEM standards. Get that in a written estimate from them and bring it back to the repair shop and tell them to install OEM Catalytic Converters on it.

It could be as simple as a oxygen sensor. What specificity is the code.
