2006 Tundra Mass Air Flow Sensor

My 2006 Toyota Tundra's check engine light came on.  I took it to AutoZone and they scanned the engine. It indicated that bank 1 and 2 were too lean. They told me a mass air flow sensor was needed. Is that an easy fix?

Just get some mass air flow sensor cleaner and clean it first. As a note, DO NOT buy a MAF sensor from auto zone, it is a part that is picky about OEM. I have never had one go bad, but it does happen.

In this video at 52 seconds, there is the long end going down, and a short end to the left of it with the little sensor that needs cleaning. Hose it down good with the MAF sensor cleaner, just make sure not to touch it. Let it dry for a minute and replace. It may act a little funny the first time you crank it.

Run it for a bit and see how it feels.

So my question is, what was it doing that made you have them check it?

@nlord The truck was and still is running fine. It is the first time that the check engine light has gone on. In any of my Tundra's. So, I thought I would get it checked out. First they said there was water in the gas tank. The second time I got it scanned they said it was the mass air flow sensor.

It may come as a surprise but clerks at AutoZone are not mechanics. Granted, once upon a time you could frequently find retired mechanics working at auto part stores. However that's become a thing of the past since the big chains pushed out most of the local independent parts stores.

In any event, in this case it might help if we knew the actual code or codes involved.

@chucktobias It said running lean on bank one. Running lean on bank two. There is no difference in the way the truck runs before or after the scan. It runs great! Thanks for your responses.

If the check engine light came on there was at least one code stored. What was it? The lean condition could be something simple like a deteriorated 19-year-old vacuum hose.
