2007 Honda Odyssey cold stalling

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey, automatic, with 168k miles in it. When I start the car in a cold morning, it stalls with check engine, VSA, and check engine lights. When it gets warm, it works just fine. I cleaned the throttle body but no change. I suspect airflow or fuel issue. Please advise.

Thanks,

Osama

If it's an airflow issue, then the simplest thing is to check your air box. Take out the old air filter, and fish around, below the bottom of the air box housing, to see if there's an accumulation of leaves or twigs or other junk stopping up the air intake, below where the bottom of the filter sits. If so, remove that junk (but be careful, because old plastic is brittle).  Then put in a new air filter. That's one variable.

There are other variables:

If the fuel pump is weak, check your battery and your alternator. A weak battery will not supply enough power to the fuel pump, and that would retard one or more of the fuel injectors, reducing its efficiency. It's simple to check a resting battery with a multimeter. It should be between 12.4 and 12.6. Turn on the alternator, and check again. If the battery is not 14.2 Volts or so, with the alternator running, then the alternator could be the issue.

These are the cheaper, DIY options. The third option is a restricted fuel filter or a failing fuel pump.

That's what I have for you, now.
