Hi !
My wife and I love Scotty's videos !
I am the original owner of a 2008 Hyundai Elantra (4 cylinder) with 180,000 miles. I do all my maintenance and take great care of the car. I changed the oil last weekend and drove it work on Monday with no issues. On Thanksgiving, I changed the ATF (used Hyundai fluid) and parked it on the street. Thanksgiving evening, I moved the car into my garage, with no issues Friday morning, I started my car and heard very loud knocking coming from the engine. I shut it off and could smell kind of a plastic odor (not gas). No check engine light and with my cheap scanner, I didn't find any codes. I checked under the car for leaks and found none, and checked the engine oil level, which was fine. I had the timing belt changed at 120K miles - as its an interference engine and was planning on doing that again after the New Year. Any ideas what might be wrong ? Should I drive it 5 miles to a local mechanic or have it towed there ? I've attached a link (I hope) to a short video that has the knocking. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmXfZfs9
Any comments or suggestions are welcome ! Thanks !
It sounds suspiciously like a cold start valve train noise situation. Either that or the pressure fed tensioner for the timing belt is clogged.
If you could find someone with a better scanner (with Mode 6, Mode 9 and Live Data functions), well, that data might be helpful in diagnosis. DTC codes have very high thresholds for reporting problems. Enhanced Diagnostics and a trained ear would yield more.
Well hopefully you just overfilled the transmission a bit. Some cars when overfilled will puke the excess fluid back out, often onto hot exhaust parts (burnt plastic smell).
Go back and double check your ATF fill and check procedures and quantities.
I don't hear any knocking in the video
