I was given a 2008 nissan altima 2.5 sl as my first car. It has 180 000 kms and runs well. With 170 hp and an automatic cvt transmission, I was wondering how much abuse it could take and what engine mods could I install. Im wondering how much hp i could make with it

That motor won't take much modification or abuse. You're at about 100k miles which is when those tend to start going south. You also have a weak transmission so you'd have to swap that out to handle extra power.
I would save my money and just drive it as is. That platform wasn't set up for mods and the aftermarket options are slim and do not add any punch to make it worth it.
