I was just wondering if I should flush the transmission fluid in my 2009 Camry 2.4 with 123k miles? I would like to get as much life out of the 5 speed transmission. Thanks
NEVER FLUSH A TRANSMISSION. You will damage it. See here: http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/238
In fact, GM & Honda have told dealers, in TSBs, that flushing trannys voids warranties.
SERVICE OPTIONS:
1. Drain and Fill;
2. Drop the pan, replace filter, gasket and ATF.
Either option is OK.
USE WS-ATF OEM fluid. NO SUBSTITUTE. Mixing fluids can damage the transmission.
The interval for a high mileage vehicle should be 50K or so, more frequently if you're climbing hills, mountains or towing.
It can be a DIY job, if you're diligent. (A few months ago I did a double drain-and-fill on my 2008 Camry tranny).
Ford has also told their dealers that it voids the warranty.
Yes!
You have to be precise about replacing the exact same amount (measure, don't guess) via the dipstick.
Now the drain & fill will not drain all the fluid. But that's OK. The tranny will have fresh lubrication additives and fresh conditioners for the seals.
I did a second drain and fill a couple of weeks later. It's optional, but it does remove more of the older fluid.
There's tutorials on Youtube, if you're needing visual instructions.
As Eric O from South Main Auto says, as he signs off from his repair videos, "If I can do it, you can do it."
Yes, even though the transmission is a sealed unit you can still drain it out. It even has a drain plug.
But do not flush it. Never ever flush an engine or transmission.
So that means I can drain the old fluid out and then add new fluid? Thanks again
So I can drain the old fluid out of my transmission then put in OEM Toyota fluid and that would be safe and not cause any damage to my transmission? Also ignore my last question thanks
yes, thats how to do it. if you are worried about any transmission damage, keep the old fluid somewhere and in the rare and probably nonexistent scenario of it having problems put the old one back in. Drain+fill with OEM fluid is the way to go
Oh I didn’t see you last response before I sent my last question
Also on a 2011 camry with the 2arfe engine can I drain and refill that transmission since it’s a sealed transmission? If so could you send me something to explain how to? Thanks
Always drain and replace. No need to flush it to cause yourself a headache
