Hi Scotty,
I own a 2009 Subaru Sti and having coolant issues. I overheated on the way home one day and parked the car. A week later I started the car and let idle for an hour and couldn’t pinpoint a leak, So I went ahead and ordered a timing belt kit and replaced all timing components, including water pump, thermostat, new coolant, and radiator caps (radiator and expansion tank)
The issue I’m coming across is my overflow tank (reserve tank) bubbles when I let my car idle when the temps start to get hot. Ive tried reburping the system multiple times with the same outcome. Not sure if I have air still in the system because Subaru’s are known for being a pain to burp the coolant system. Or do I have a head gasket issue? Not sure where to go from here.
My question is have you seen a Subaru with an EJ motor have air in the system still and it bubbles out of the reserve tank (transparent tank that sits on outside of radiator)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you
I tried this already. Passes this test. Thanks for the input. Appreciate it
well if coolant isn't leaking out anywhere then it must be trapped air. Park on an uphill so the radiator is the highest point, get it nice and hot, and just run it for as long as it needs. You could try opening the throttle a bit to 2,000-2,500 RPM just to run the pump faster. It might help to push out more bubbles. Make sure to turn on the heater too.
I’ve done this again with what I feel was successful with lots of bubbles while it reached normal operating temps. After I burped the system I let the car sit and came back to it. The reservoir tank on the radiator ( not pressurized it’s an overflow tank for the coolant) had raised up an inch or so and was bubbling. Not sure if this is still air in the system or if I have a head gasket issue
Not sure why you went to this degree, a proper diagnosis might have saved you a few bucks and your time.
What do you recommend I do? I’m so lost lol😆
Is it still overheating?
Nope car doesn’t overheat, only bubbles from the reserve tank Aka coolant overflow tank. (Not pressurized)
