Scotty,
I have a 2009 Toyota Highlander Limited V6 with the 3.5L V6, 136,000 miles, automatic transmission. I recently had the vehicle serviced at my local Toyota Dealership, they stated I should have my Timing Cover replaced. They quoted me $25.00 for the part and $3120.00 for 24 hours of labor. Is this a service that is necessary? Thank you for your time and for making great informative videos!
It is the AWD model.
The 2GR-FE engines are notorious for that oil leak but you should check the leak. Most of the times it is not even a seepage and you don't need to worry about it. Check out this video:
There's no way the entire timing cover is $25. Likely the timing cover sealant to reseal it, and yes, it's a BIG job. Because of what's involved to reseal the timing cover, the engine comes out of the car which is why it's booked at 24 hrs.
Is it necessary? Eventually, but it depends on how bad the leak is. But you need to see if the timing cover leak has just started and is just seeping or if it's been leaking for a while and beyond just living with it. Here's a video on what's involved.

Why bother with the dealer? For that price, you could get a re-manufactured engine with a warranty.
And they will most likely botch the job.
They will most definitely botch the job.
I should have my Timing Cover replaced.
what's wrong with the cover?
Thank you! I plan on having a local mechanic do it vs. the dealership. Just trying to figure out how urgent it is to replace. Looks like I just need to monitor my Highlander’s oil consumption between changes and go from there.
