Just wondering if the electric water pump on my 2011 BMW 328i with 110k continually runs when going down the highway or is it controlled by the thermostat? The car is used going back and forth from Denver to Santa Fe, so it's all mostly highway mileage. I've heard that these water pumps s/b replaced a 100k or so, but mine is pumping fine into the reservoir,
Yeah they only work one needed that was the big deal that they're more efficient and you can retain more heat and have an engine that gets better gas mileage that's why they went to that crazy thing
I would just let I go until the service engine soon light came on. I am a BMW fan but am not a mechanic so I don't truly know. If it says service engine soon at that point replacing it is the right thing to do or have it checked. I have heard the same 100k rule but maybe yours can last another 100k who knows. If you want to feel confident you will not be stuck on the side of the road go on and buy the replacement pump. To bad Scotty doesn't actually answer your question and instead just goes on about how bad BMW's are. I will admit they are not Toyota reliable but they are definitely not Chrysler's either. I have respect for the Japanese brands and I also have respect for German technology which seems to have now fixed the water pump problem with newer models being better, I respect Scotty I just feel like a lot of the people on this forum think it is a Toyota/Honda or nothing and have that mentality and I think scotty encourages that to an existent. I like your channel scotty but hating on someone's car and saying how bad it is instead of helping them is not why people come to your forum. We want your knowledge and others on this forums knowledge and opinions. If they are thinking of buying or selling the car that is different.
Here is one for $272 without shipping that would probably be less than a towing bill.
He bashes on BMW too much, yet praises Toyota and Honda too much. Are BMWs over-engineered? Yes, but they are pretty reliable in my opinion, especially the newer ones. I actually think they are the best German car brand compared to the others. They are not that expensive to maintain as Scotty over-exagerates, and you can get parts for them cheap from FCP Euro. But being able to fix things on it yourself is a different story compared to taking it to the stealerships. Toyota and Honda are not always the answer...some people would like something fun and luxurious to drive.
So, should I replace the pump or just let it go?
It’s controlled by a thermostat. How do I know this? My BMW thermostat went out. I replaced both the thermostat and the water pump.
I’d like to hear from others, but I believe the default position is on. When my thermostat broke, the fan constantly ran. Technically I didn’t need to fix it, but it is annoying and loud, so I ended up fixing it for an arm and a leg.
