hi Scotty, I  recently purchased a used 2011 RX 350 with 173,000 miles on it for $7000. As soon as I got it home check engine, light, ABS light and all wheel drive check engine showed up on the car. contacted the seller, he suggested “I think this happened because sensor number two needs to be cleaned on its own. This is not bad and does not require additional investment. error number p0174.”

I had the car inspected. They did find the code PO 174 and PO 179. I’m questioning if I just wasted $7000. Machanic has yet to give me a price on this. He says it needs to be further diagnosed. I’m wondering how much this might cost me. also, is this a job that I should let the local Machanic do or should I bring it to the dealer?

Didn't any of that show up when you had a mechanic inspect the vehicle before buying it? Was it purchased from a private sale or from a dealer? You can never believe what a seller tells you.

I had the car inspected. They did find the code PO 174 and PO 179.

P0174 is a lean condition that can be caused by something as simple as a vacuum leak or dirty MAF sensor.

P0179 could just be a bad gas cap.

In both cases there are several potential causes that need to be diagnosed.

ABS faults are very commonly caused by bad wheel sensors, though you need an advanced scan tool to properly diagnose it.

It's a 13-year-old vehicle with 173,000 miles on it. It's not reasonable to expect something like that to have zero issues, you have to expect some problems. So far they don't sound too serious, but troubleshooting is needed to find out the actual causes.

There's no way to tell at this point how much it might cost. In general you want to stay away from dealers and chain shops and stick with a good independent mechanic. Of course we have no way of knowing how good your mechanic is.
