I have a 2011 Forester with 185,000 on it. It had the seals done at 98000 by the dealer. However, now its consuming oil again at about 1qt per 1200-1500 miles. the Car is sound other then the oil issue and has just had new exhaust, brakes, and front wheel bearing housings on both sides. Looking for suggestions to help with this issue. Some have said try Lucas. I am leaning towards a new engine and Subaru quoted 12k to 14k!!! 😲 😲 😲 Maybe a rebuild? But I have heard some bad stories from people. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Another engine is the way I am leaning, so if you have suggestions on good rebuilds please let me know who they are.
Thanks
Terry
These engines are available from many places in long block form for about $4,000. Suppliers include ATK, Advance Auto Parts, Jasper, Powertrain Products. All come with warranties. If a dealer quoted you $12-14,000, I would find an honest independent mechanic who will work with you. You should be able to get a warranted, re manufactured engine installed for a total of around $6000, not $12,000.
Older Subarus are notorious for their piston rings wearing out and allowing for oil to enter the combustion chamber. If I were you I would just live with it and top the oil off every one thousand miles. My 2001 Outback burns a quart every 1k miles and I’ve just topped it off every once in a while and had no issues. With a car with that many miles it may not be worth replacing or rebuilding the engine.
