2011 Volkswagen Jetta transmission issues??

My son has a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta and recently went out of town and had some acceleration issues. He would try to accelerate but the car would not respond to him pressing the pedal and wouldn't go over a certain speed. He stopped and got some OBD codes that indicated transmission overheating however he hasn't had any since and none prior to. The car was recently bought used from a car dealership so we assumed major systems were working properly. Since this seems transmission related I am concerned and wanted to know the best course of action.

Will this be an expensive job or just a maintenance issue?

Here are the details of the car:

2011 Jetta/ Automatic /121,099

Secondary DTC codes

00453-000 and 00641-001

Does not sound like a tranny.

some OBD codes

what ones?

bought used from a car dealership

That's the worst.

this seems transmission related

If it would rev up to red line and not move, or go into limp mode - then it would be, but to me it does not sound like that.

00453-000

Clear codes, Connect a good scan tool (not crap like the bluedriver) that gives code definitions (vw loves to use the same code numbers for different faults and to know what one you're actually having you need a scanner that can specify) and go for a drive monitoring tranny temp - probably not temp related.

Not a good assumption. Used car dealers typically sell cars they've obtained at auction that have little or no known history.

It needs to be looked at by a transmission specialist before more damage is done. Automatic transmission repairs are rarely inexpensive.

Thanks. I will see about borrowing or purchasing a scanner to see what it shows. Well the dealer is a major market dealer for Mazda so car was a trade in and the shop said they looked through it. But yeah it's always a toss up as you never know what prior person did.

Do you know if this model or series of VWs have known issues with powertrain?
