Mom called me this afternoon and said that a new light came on when she started the car today. It said "AT check". Her car only has 48,000 miles on it. What could be going on?
Someone Help!
For future reference, it is best to put new questions into their own topic. That way attention can be focused on the problem at hand. (Question has been moved into its own topic.)
There is a problem with the automatic transmission (CVT). It is not unusual for the Jatco CVTs used in Nissans to fail at low mileage. That's one of the reasons we recommend people not buy those cars.
You need to have the car scanned with a professional-grade scan tool that can read transmission codes to find out what the problem is.
Please DO NOT go to a dealer. They will rip you off. Find an independent mechanic to help with your problem.
My mom lives in a little town in Eastern Kentucky and unfortunately there are no independent mechanics that have scan tools and knowledge like the people that answer questions on this forum. They do have a O'Riley's Auto Parts and she is going to take the car there tomorrow and see if they have a scanner that can read the codes.
I live 400 miles away and I'm trying to do my best to help guide her. My dad passed away in 2020 of COVID. She is 72 years young and there is no one else that can help her. She made an appointment to take the car to a nissan dealership in mid September. Hopefully we will find another way to solve this problem before then.
I wish you the best.
@wormtail, hope it works out and is repairable, but the experience with Nissan/Jatco CVTs is very bad so she should be prepared for the worst.
If O'Reilly's cannot read the transmission codes and there is no choice but to go to a dealer for diagnosis, make sure she understands not to let the stealership bully her into paying a fortune for transmission replacement (not worth putting a lot of money into that thing) or, worse yet, buying another Nissan that will likely develop the same problem.
I told her not to approve any work to be done to the car until we discuss it and to make sure she gets a estimate in writing.
We have scheduled an appointment at the nissan dealership to have the codes read. I am trying to prepare my mom for the worst case scenario that her car may not be worth fixing.
Thank you all for your help,
Mike
