My dad took his truck to a repair shop and they discovered an issue with his rear differential to the point where they said driving it normally is a ticking time bomb and he shouldn't tow with it under and circumstance. Is he able to tow and drive fine in your opinion or no? Pictures are in the link. Thank you for your time. https://imgur.com/a/PbQsZmx
@imperator What led him to bringing his truck in was a loud whirring noise when driving at higher speeds and it'd quiet down when going slower similar to a wheel bearing problem which is what I suspected first. When the mechanics took the rear diff cover off they told my dad the oil inside was dirty so that was changed out. Further inspection led them to seeing what the pictures show you, and they quoted my dad 6k for remanufactured axles. They're having a hard time finding him junkyard axles with decently low miles on them. He found one company that can send him that one specific piece to replace but what he wants to know is if he can take his truck home and drive it as he usually does without problems. Maybe the replaced oil could fix the noise. And he's wondering if the damage shown is really as big of an issue as the mechanics told him it is.
listen to the mechanics. Your dad shouldn't put himself and other motorists in danger.
Maybe the replaced oil could fix the noise.
It won't fix the noise. The differential has moved beyond its tolerance factor. It could grenade at any point.
If the company is having a hard time finding a differential with fewer miles on it in junkyards, that means there's an inherent problem with them.
