2013 Dodge Avenger 2.4L cooling and transmission things

Hey Scotty,

I saw you only had a small bit to say about a Dodge Avenger, and this was after I had bought my 2013 Dodge Avenger, it was at 90k miles but now its almost at 100k, i have no codes being thrown or dash lights, but when the summer in Indiana hit and i was in stand still traffic, my car started to over heat, the coolant level was middle down the line not full but not low, and it would only happen when sitting idle, and when it drove it cooled back to operational temp, there are no leaks, but I suspect nothings been changed for the engine cooling system since the car rolled off the lot, and also my transmission shifts rough when shifting around 40 its not like we got hit in the rear end like hit, but enough of a jolt yu kinda notice it, transmission dip stick  after sitting showed completely filled like on the hot rating. What do you think is going in with this thing? And also i was looking at a 2014 chevy malibu with 85k to trade this car in for, or a 2017 cadillac xts with 95k miles, the fiancé and I are about to have a baby and we want my car to be a bit more reliable than what this dodge is showing to be.

Thank you for your time and I will be watching your channel more often, i want to be a mechanic if i cant get into law enforcement and i feel like the information you give is good news!

Make sure the cooling fans are running when it's sitting still and starting to overheat

It's falling apart. They're prone to that and overheating it didn't help matters.

If the transmission has never been serviced the poor shifting is not surprising.

You're looking at the wrong vehicles if you want reliability. Either of those would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

What would be a reliable car?

Typically Toyota or Honda, avoiding problem models. If looking at newer cars (like around 5 years old or newer) Mazda or Subaru can be OK. For any used car a pre-purchase inspection by a good mechanic is a must.
