2014 Xterra spark plug gap question

The owners manual says the gap should be 0.043. I checked the gap of the first plug that I removed and it was 0.039. The new plugs are gapped at 0.035. The NGK website says the new plugs should have been gapped for 0.044. Should the plugs be gapped for 0.044 or 0.035? I don't know for sure if I need to return the plugs.

.043"

Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Aside from the owner's manual there should be a sticker in the engine compartment that documents the proper spark plug gap.

The owners manual says 0.043". I couldn't find a sticker in the engine bay that mentions the gap setting but someone at some service center stole the "beauty cover". According to the NGK website the new plugs were suppose to be pre-gapped for 0.044". I guess I'll have to send them back. On a related note, NGK says their Platinum plugs only last 40,000 miles. I was under the impression that any Platinum plug were suppose to last 100,000 miles.

Can anyone explain why the original plug had a gap that measured 0.039"? If it was suppose to be 0.043" why did the gap get smaller instead of bigger over time?

Clearly that plug was not gapped according to the specification printed in the owner's manual when it was installed. However the .004" (four thousandths of an inch) deviation from spec was not sufficient to cause problems.

it's possible the gap was from the factory (spark plug manu)
th "beauty cover" may never have been there
my 08 has all the attachment points for the cover but never had a cover
my .02c

How do they gap these plugs at the factory? By machine or by human hands?
