My mom is looking at a gorgeous 2015 Sonata Limited loaded with everything. I know as I own a 2020 Elantra not to expect the complete bulletproof of a Toyota but I do believe and will continue to believe Hyundai’s and Kias are reliable as I’ve seen proof of it with many going past 200k with no issues. She has a 2007 Corolla which is amazing for reliability but parts are starting to literally fall apart at 190k. The sonata is 12k at 99k miles. The engine is apart of the theta 2 class action lawsuit and if it blows it’s supposed to be covered for a lifetime warranty extension aka if it blows at 200k it’s a free engine replacement. Good buy?
You have a great imagination if you think Hyundai’s are reliable. Mine has Rod Knock at only 61,000 miles. Oil was changed on time.
@mod_man 's experience with a 2014 Hyundai Sonata
"2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T remains to this day the only car I have driven that the motor blew up in while I was driving. At 38k miles. Nobody can run fast enough to sell me a Korean car."
Hyundais could last 200k miles but those were the ones 10 15 years ago from about 2010 on they are made in US (the engines are made weak) and they have GDI and turbos and all that stuff they fall apart you can't expect more than 100k miles out of one. Its definetly not worth 2/3 that price.
Even if Hyundais can last 200k miles like you said, which they can't, this generation of Sonata is one of the worst cars they ever made. They tend to blow up, literally.
Horrible cars. Nice ride and very comfortable but I had a 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.0t and it caught on fire at 111k miles only a month after I got the stupid thing.
- First off mod_man is correct
- second, although that theta motor is part of class action suit it is very unlikely the dealer will replace and if they do it could take months. There are plenty of testimonials that talk about this. Hyundai is trying like mad to keep the fact they can’t build motors correctly as quiet as they can. my recommendation is keep EVERY SINGLE oil change receipt either from dealer or quick lube or if you do it yourself keep receipt.
- my advice, STAY COMPLETELY away from Korean made vehicles.
Nope.
It's a 100k mile Hyundai. And $12k is way too much anyway.
I would pass on that. Sure you will always have examples of Hyundais with high mileage, but it’s the exception not the norm. Also, you can’t always believe what they tell you about lifetime warranty extension. I’ve had more friends/co-workers switch from Hyundais to Toyota’s/Honda’s than the opposite. Besides poor service and quality issues, Hyundai would not fix items that were supposed to be covered under warranty.
