my daughters bought a used 2016 Hyundai elantra with about 50k miles about a year ago. recently and only sporadically it goes into limp mode. it does not throw codes so no mechanic can figure it out. if when in limp mode you turn it off and restart, it drives just fine. Dash lights come on and then go off. other than this issue the car drives just great.

You need a mechanic who is not so lazy. Checking for codes is just the bare beginning of the diagnostic process. A good mechanic would analyze live data for problems, maybe even try to capture data for analysis when the problem happens.
