Hello Scotty,
I have a 2018 Subaru Forester with CVT and 50K miles. This vehicle has averaged 33 mpg thus far. I do notice a very considerable drop in mileage (mid to upper twenties) during the winter months when temps begin averaging less than ~30F. Is this due to the engine running cold or the drive train or both? Should I consider covering the grill during the winter months? 🙂
No need to cover the grill unless you're in the Arctic.
They all use more fuel warming up in cold weather.
It is due to the cold temperatures. although it seems to be a big drop. Keep eyes on it in warm weather. Also change the air filter and clean the MAF sensor.
Drop in fuel economy when it gets colder? Yes. A lot? That depends, … snow and slush covered roads, … extra rolling resistance. That adds up to fuel consumption. Tires under inflated because colder operating temperature, … more resistance again. Adds up as well. Longer warm up time, … cold engine longer than normal. Yep, … fuel gage registers that, too.
As to covering front grill? Don’t, … thermostat takes care of all that. Now, … if your temperature gauge no longer goes up to where it normally pegs, expect faulty thermostat, either partly stuck, or perhaps faulty - starts opening too early - it’s operating range may be lower than it should be. Consider these issues first, …
Oh, and tires: … if you installed snow tires for winter, efficiency will drop a bit too …
