Hey Scotty,
I am in the market for a commuter car. I’m looking at a 2018 Kia Soul with 28,000mi and Manual Transmission for $11,000 or a 2017 Honda Civic with 36,000mi and Manual Transmission for $17,000. Both are naturally aspirated engines. My question is, should I save the 6 grand and opt for the Kia?
Regarding Kia:

Soul
4,000 miles
The car was parked in a public parking lot, with no one around it, when the engine caught fire and destroyed the engine compartment. Fire inspector stated cause of the fire could not be determined.

Obviously the Civic is the better car but they asking too much. Either haggle hard or look for one with maybe some more miles.
No, if you intend on keeping the vehicle for the long-haul. If the $6K is critical, then get a civic that has a few more miles or years on it. (Again, get a PPI in any case, to determine condition, not wrecked, stolen, flooded, a history of lemon-like repairs, etc.)
Scotty's clear on this: Kia and Hyundai have problems, particularly with engines.
Appreciate the input! No problem with eliminating cars from my search
Go with the Honda Civic for longevity and less chance for issues over time. The Kia quality is not as good as Honda’s, especially after 2009, and more of a risk.
BTW, the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on Kia’s only apply to the original owner. FYI.
Definitely get the Honda and NOT the Kia.
The civic is a much better car. If you only want to keep the Kia to say 100000 that car would be okay.
Definitely go for the Honda if you value your money. Kia and Hyundai’s catch on fire and only full coverage insurance would cover that, but not without giving you a hard time
