2020 Honda Civic Electrical Failure at 2,800 Miles

Hi Scotty and friends,

I have a 2020 Honda Civic Sport 6-Speed with 2,800 miles that experienced an extreme electronics failure yesterday. I took a slow right turn at an intersection and after completing the turn, my civic violently turned to the right heading towards a ditch with trees next to the road which I avoided by swerving to the left and staying on the street. The car then began juddering and I could not go faster than 15mph or so, no matter what gear I was in. Every single vehicle trouble light came on, with warnings from auto-high beam failure to emissions failure to brake system failure to power steering failure.. you name it. Turning the car off and on multiple times did not help, and the vehicle was eventually towed to the Honda dealership.

The dealer found a code for Crankshaft Position Sensor error. After clearing it and all of the other lights, they were unable to reproduce it with multiple test drives. They could not find any issue with the wiring and do not know how the issue occurred. I am VERY concerned because if this issue had happened while I was driving my civic on the highway, it is very likely I could have crashed. Not sure what to do and do not feel safe driving my new car....

Thank you for your time.

Could it be a steering box failure? When my car did something similar, I totaled it out and sold it. But my car was over 20 years old. To have one as new as yours makes it sound like it's been in an accident or had serious trouble. But I assume you bought it new so doubt that's the case.

Take the car to a independent mechanic shop and find out what the code is. Then take it back to the dealer and ask them to fix under warranty if you have. You may also ask your mechanic to check the stored data and analyze them to really find out what the issue was.

That sounds scary. Did you ever find out what the problem was and did the dealership fix it?

does it have lane assist?

I have a 2018 accord and the ACC and braking mitigation, lane departure mitigation go out constantly. Especially after the latest recall update it’s way worse. Hardly ever works now. 67,000 miles way out of warranty but it’s been an issue since the car was new and turning off and back on always fixed. I know other people would never put up with that but it literally says on the dealer website when you’re scheduling a service for that issue that you should try turning the car off and back on again to “reset it”. And from what I’ve read that’s all they do at the dealership. I’m looking at paying whatever fees they try to charge me tomorrow and then dispute it with Honda corporate. My only thing is how do I know they won’t charge me $500 for something when it could be something as simple as a loose plug on the sensor? That’s what’s in the back of my mind... oh and forgot to mention my LKA works the entire time while this is happening
