I've a 2020 Honda Odyssey with 44000KM. Is it normal that the transmission broke down? The mechanic found the mental chuck on the drain plug. Transmission fluid discolored. Can these be the reason that warranty declined?
That looks like manufacturing defect, it's hard to imagine anything you could have done to cause that kind of damage. If you have records showing that the factory maintenance schedule has been adhered to the dealer is stonewalling you. They don't make any money on warranty work and replacing that transmission is a big job. Contact Honda corporate as @imperator has advised.
My first thought was someone had to have access to the transmission to mess that plug up.
we talked with the manager in the dealer. He mentioned that this decision was made by honda tech line
Don't discount the possibility that the dealer is lying to you. Contact Honda's corporate customer service department directly.
That's a bit soon for the transmission to fail, but Odyssey's are known for weak transmissions. This should be a warranty fix since 5 years hasn't past since the car was bought.
yup, warranty should be covered for 5 years or 100km, whichever comes first. Do we have to do any service for the transmission?
they declined due to negligence
Neglect of what? What were you supposed to do, according to them? Is it in the owner's manual?
the manual just says replace the fluid on 90000km.
exactly. So are they just trying to pull a fast one on you? Don't back down. Call Honda national customer service if you need to.
44,000 km is 27,340 miles where I am from. No automaker will ever state to change transmission fluid by 44,000 km. Some will even claim lifetime fluid (meaning you never have to change which is BS). Anyways, you are NOT on the hook for changing the fluid by 44,000 km.
.
Should the transmission fail by 44,000 km?! Heck no! Not even GM, Ford, or FCA’s vehicles have transmissions that fail that soon. If a transmission does fail, there is an issue with the transmission itself that came from the factory that way.
.
Go to another dealer and see what they say. Otherwise, contact Honda Corporate and complain (but be nice) to them about this. Tell them you are very disappointed and this has left a sour taste in your mouth and be firm with them to fix the situation.
.
Also, email Scotty Kilmer (see under FAQ about how to contact him) and explain to them what you wrote here. Maybe Scotty will address Honda on YouTube and shame them.
we talked with the manager in the dealer. He mentioned that this decision was made by honda tech line, he cant do anything. only thing we can do is connecting to honda relayionship.
Is the color of this transmission fliud normal?
The fluid looks pretty good. It's clear.... you can see through it. It's about what I would expect for for 40,000 km
My first thought was someone had to have access to the transmission to mess that plug up.
that occurred to me too. Mechanic could have grabbed some metal out of trash, stuck it to the magnet, and snapped a photo. That way they could blow you off, and work on more lucrative jobs.
That chunk is huge. Did the car drive before you brought it to them?
He mentioned that this decision was made by honda tech line,
Don't believe a word of it. Just skip this scumbag dealership altogether. Call the 1-800 and get on the phone directly with Honda national. Get it straight from the horses mouth, and insist they show you where exactly in your contract it says they can deny your claim. If they break their contract then you're in your rights to sue, but be polite and give them a chance to make things right. And file a complaint about this dealership so they don't rip off other people.
how can the dealer know the miles overdue..
If oil changes are done by the dealer they have a record of the mileage. If done by the owner or a third party it's up to the owner to provide receipts verifying when the oil change was done.
What are you opinions base on the transmission fluid on the picture? Normal after 3 years and 8 months?
Irrelevant.
As has already been stated if all scheduled maintenance required by Honda has been done then your warranty obligation has been satisfied. If the fluid has been contaminated in some way by internal flaws in a defective transmission that's on them. At this point you should be talking to Honda corporate directly instead of dancing around what the dealer has been throwing at you.
Is it normal that the transmission broke down?
I mean, it's kind of normal for Odysseys. They do have a history of transmission problems. But it's not normal in general for transmissions to fail so soon.
Can these be the reason that warranty declined?
are you saying Honda denied your warranty claim? What is their justification? I think that's pretty messed up. If I were you, I would read the warranty contract fine print very carefully.
they declined due to negligence... They said there is metal chuck found on the drain plug, fluid discolored, and the drain plug gasket appeared to brand new. But I didn't replace any transmission fluid.
warranty should be covered for 5 years or 100km,
100,000 km?
Do we have to do any service for the transmission?
what does the manual say?
the manual just says replace the fluid on 90000km.
One look at the drain plug and I thought 'what the heck?'. Regardless, the car has a manufacturer's warranty and they should stand behind it.
Is the color of this transmission fliud normal?Does the gasket appear to new?
metal chunks are evidence of poor manufacturing, not negligence. You abided by your side of the contract, right? Now they should uphold their own.
I have two friends that had Hyundai's that the engine blew up and the dealership didn't want to replace it under warranty cuz they were a few hundred miles overdue on an oil change one sent Dunkin and the other subway and they both got new engines
how can the dealer know the miles overdue..
They can see from the paperwork when the oil changes were done
Can someone teach me how to post the picture? I can show two pictures which i got from the mechanic.
on our main page, click the forum guide
FOUND METAL CHUNKS ON THE DRAIN BOLT MAGNET. COMPARED FLUID
TO NEW OEM ATF 2.0, FOUND DISCOLORED. DRAIN PLUG GASKET ALSO APPEARS TO
BE BRAND NEW. HAS DEEMED THE CAUSE OF
FAILURE WAS DUE TO NEGLIGENCE THEREFORE NOT COVERED VIA WARRANTY.
2020 Honda Odyssey was brand new brought it from Honda dealer.
base on those 2 pictures and their explanation , they said warranty not covered.
but we never replaced the transmission fluid, because is 44,000KM and we drove for 3 years and 8 months.
please give some advise.

Dont know why, cant post the picture... (Fixed)
Thanks Buddy.
Report said: Compared fluid to new OME ATF 2.0 , found “discolored”. Can someone explain what this mean? They confirmed that was not a transmission fluid or transmission fluid was very bad condition? What are you opinions base on the transmission fluid on the picture? Normal after 3 years and 8 months? …
Besides, Honda asked for all our maintenance record. We sent all the invoices we got from other auto shop. The services we had done were like oil changes, filter change. Would this maintenance be not enough for our car? Thank you
