Hi Scotty,
What do you think about getting a 2020 Hyundai Accent SE with manual transmission and 20k miles for $16,000? I know Hyundai/Kia have been improving, but they still have some notable problems (e.g., engine blowups in 2017).
What’s the engine displacement?
Also what’s the MSRP?
With the same money, you can buy a relatively low mileage 2020 Corolla with manual transmission which can last much longer than that Hyundai.
The price is way over what I'd pay. IMO, seems to me like a terrible deal...
Unlike most Hyundais that are full of bells and whistles, the accent is just the opposite, cheap and generally simple. The 1.6L engines tend to last for quite a while depending on maintenance and careful driving, and you pretty much can't go wrong with a manual (the CVT "iVT" on these is a nightmare). BUT, it's quite definitely is going to be less reliable than a Corolla sedan.
You're pretty much paying MSRP for a 2 year old vehicle with quite a few miles that might be already out of warranty because so many Hyundai warranties in the US aren't transferable.
If it would've been 1/2 the price, I'd have the controversial opinion that maybe it might be alright.
But it's not at only $4k cheaper than a brand new Corolla? it's just not worth it.
The way that Hyundai is probably going to deprecate to nothing as soon as the chip/supply shortage ends (it's a Hyundai, it has a manual, and it's not a crossover so I don't see it holding it's value well), to me it looks like you're going to loose a fortune on depreciation and get stuck with a mediocre car you don't even have warranty on...
As someone who generally doesn't hold a grudge against Hyundai, I've been quite satisfied with the Hyundai-Kias I've owned (but that being said I don't tend to hold my cars for over 120k-130k miles and that's when econoboxes tend to begin to fall apart), For that price, I'd avoid it. it's just not cheap enough to get it over a Toyota with a launch gear CVT as long as you can find one that isn't over 5 years old or with over 60k miles (sadly with these CVT transmissions and a lot of owners neglecting to maintain them, I'd say getting one with higher millage is a risk, unless there's documented proof that the CVT oil has been replaced at least every 50k, IMO it should be done even every 25k)
