A friend of mine back in February purchased a brand new 2020 Kia Sedona minivan okay. But here's the thing the engine blew up after 3,000 miles. Does this sound normal or not?

Definitely doesn’t sound normal for a 2020. Sounds either like a mistake was made during production or user error. However I don’t see many 2020 kia sedonas out there. I would say trade it in for a car that you see driving around every day like a honda odyssey or a toyota sienna because you know that cars gonna be reliable. I had a 2007 Honda Odyssey with terrible maintenance history and it lasted me up until 250,000 miles. And it didn’t even die I crashed it. It was still running strong

This is definetly NOT normal. It is usual for newer Kia/Hyundai vehicles to have their engines blow up at 50k 90k 120k miles, but usually not that early. Probably made wrong because of the quality control. Those things start at 30 grand I feel bad for your friend you can get a 5 year old one for around 6 7 grand look at the depreciation. The older 2008 2012 Sedonas are much more reliable I have a 2009 Kia Sportage and the quality control of the powertrain was much better than. The interior quality, style etc. have improved since then, but the engine and transmissions could easily do 150 200k miles. The newer ones are made in USA piles of junk engines. I would go to Kia and see if the warranty covers it. No matter what, I would not use it more than a couple of years and then GET RID OF IT. Consider a USED Toyota Sienna. If you would have got a used Kia Sedona odds are you would be happier. Scotty is getting a ton of reports of engine failure on 2017 2018 models Kia/Hyundais;(
