Aloha!

I am looking for pointers on my course of action regarding this issue!

My fianceé and I bought our first new car, a 2020 Soul in 2019, and we just got the 'overly hardened' oil ring recall notice last week. We are bummed that there is a serious problem like this, we like the car and it fits our needs, but I'm angry that their 'fix' is to just toss in a knock sensor. I would prefer a new engine, but after watching and reading about the potential fires I'm comfortable with that as a solution either. We currently have about a year of payments left on it, and not confident the dealer would take the thing off our hands for anywhere close to full value.

Any help with a course of action would be appreciated!

Mahalo!

Put it up for sale and see what you get. For your next car, consider Toyota or Honda.

If you have no confidence in the car, sell it and get a better vehicle that isnt a Hyundai/a Kia. It's an expensive lesson, sure, but at least you would have reliable vehicle.

I've been there with engine problems on a new vehicle. Its not a fun place to be. You could ask for a new motor, but the dealer will probably say no since that's not what the manufacturer is willing to cover.

I'd only have confidence if I could get the engine replaced. I have a feeling that's not likely to happen.

@lazyfool446 I wouldn’t have confidence in the new motor either considering it’s the same design as your old motor. Wife’s 2015 Hyundai Elantra’s motor Hyundai made them incorrectly and they replaced some. But they were motors that came from the same assembly line with no changes whatsoever. Who’s to say that “new” motor won’t end up doing the same thing.

@USAFdozerpilot Is right. There are no guarantees the new engine would be better as nothing would mechanically be different.

Insure the hell out of it, park it in neutral facing downhill off a cliff.

don't forget to set it on fire since that's the natural state of Kias

I should have thought of that, Joe. Thanks!

If it is still under warranty like 50000miles. You can go to court or tell them that you need a new motor. Trust me Korean German Italian and GM vicheals are endless money pit.

As for now I see two option for you to get your money back asap

1 talk to the dealer and ask for new motor if he says no take it to the court

2 sell it and get half of your money back

go to court under what claim? what legal obligation do they have to give you a free motor?

@mountainmanjoe SPOT ON 👏 Hyundai Kia have got away with this how many yrs? haha

I'm not saying this person doesn't deserve a new motor. I'm just saying he will probably have a hard time defending that claim in court.

Manufacturing defect

they're only obligated to do what is stated in the warranty contract
