A new colleague just told me she is planning to purchase a 2021 Elantra hybrid this weekend. I told her to at least take a look at the Corolla. I'm sure Scotty would say get the Corolla and get it used! However she wants new and has her heart set on the Elantra and hybrid.
I haven't had time to dig into this so hoping someone might chime in with their thoughts, pros and cons.
Thanks!
Does it have to be a hybrid?
I've tried to dissuade her but I think it's too late...
Hyundai Motor Group is not known for quality/durability and they have declined since 2010. How many years and miles does she need it to last? I advise against it, especially a hybrid which Hyundai is not known for. The best (and true and tried) hybrids are from Toyota (I.e. the Prius).
My recommendation: Stick to a regular gas vehicle. They will last longer than a hybrid version, and more mechanics can work on regular gas vehicles over hybrids. Regular gas vehicles have enough complexity as it is; going hybrid adds to that. Over time, especially if she keeps for a while, battery replacement or something in the hybrid system will need repair and that will cost $$$ when it occurs. Also, finding a competent mechanic that knows how to work on hybrids will be a challenge and being a specialty expect to pay more for repairs; going to a dealer would be even more expensive as well (assuming they can even troubleshoot and fix correctly). I would stick to a regular gas version if you plan to keep the vehicle for a long time and put lots of mileage on it. Hyundai Motor Group products have enough issues as it is with their gasoline products, why complicate things further with a hybrid?
Thanks for the advice DayWalker!
Lol, well, it’s her money..
It may be worthwhile recommending her to lease it, rather than buy.
