Hey! My wife just bought a 2021 Ford Escape S 1.5L 3 cylinder engine 8 speed automatic transmission, it has 10k miles, it currently has no codes and I/M readiness looks good, ive heard terrible things about these cars, just wondering what kind of things i should expect in the future, anything critical? Will it last her 100k miles with regular maintenance? Thanks!
Those little 3-cylinder turbo engines are pretty awful.

I second that being pretty bad car. Ford quality is practically non-existent right now. They also are having a hard time building certain fuel injectors, apparently. That's not supposed to happen after 40 years. Rather than replace them, they're recalling certain vehicles and plumbing them so they don't start a fire. I may never buy another Ford again and I'm a Ford fan.
I don’t think we can guarantee no issues within the first 100,000 miles even with diligent maintenance. Ford’s quality is pretty bad and they have had higher warranty claims than GM the past couple years, and GM already is a low bar.
.
Personally, I would get Ford’s extended warranty which I think is good for up to 8 years max (double check), and then get rid of the vehicle outside of warranty.
1.5L 3 cylinder (...) 10k miles (...) ive heard terrible things about these cars
Still on the original head gasket? Just kidding.
These cars have a well deserved reputation, personally I was very interested in the Dragon engine - but upon further investigation it became clear that it is weak.
There's still not enough information on it and not enough higher millage cars to say for sure - but so far things are looking pretty bad with random low millage failures and a particularly annoying carbon build up issue on exhaust valves.
Will it last her 100k miles with regular maintenance
At a 4.5k mile interval for city driving and 6.25k mile interval for highway driving - it may.
Personally I'd expect it to be decent for 60k miles, afterwards I'd be skeptical, which Ford quality you never know.
The 4 cylinder did not last 100k miles:
will the 3 cylinder? probably not
after all it's build for tough.

Scotty usually recommends to stay away from EcoBoost engines.
But you are basically stuck with it unless you can sell it.
For the sake of argument, assume you keep it.
1) Be extra diligent with the scheduled maintenance. Do the transmission fluid and coolant fluid twice as often as recommended.
2) The head gasket problem was due to a coolant leak. Always check to make sure your coolant tank is full. And look for leaks on the ground. If you can catch it fast, you can potentially save yourself some heart ache down the line.
3) Consider installing an oil catch can. Search Scotty’s YouTube for oil catch can. He goes through how it works, and how it can help your valves from carbon build up. Since, TMK, it is a direct injection engine. If you do install one, make sure to empty it every now and then, otherwise t there is no point to it.
If you can get rid of it for a RAV4 or Corolla Cross, that would be the better route. But if you are stuck with it, might as well do what you can to make it last as long as possible.
