2nd Gen. (1998-2005) Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon Denali As A Daily?

Hey guys I am playing to move to So-Cal in a few months but wanted a truck (non-deisel) and not a 4Runner. I am thinking of a 2nd Gen. Chevy Tahoe or a GMC Yukon Denali of the same years. I will be commuting daily mostly (except possibly weekends) on the freeway mostly.

I am wondering if these are suuuper bad for freeway commuting. Or if one is better than the other? I plan on driving about 20-40 miles a day for work so thats about 280 miles a week. I plan on putting either 89 or 91 gas and would hope to spend around $150 a week tops with gas around $3.50/gal. Is this doable and will I really get only 17 mpg on the freeway? Thanks.

I am about to get rid of a 2006 GMC Yukon XL. I have had a lot of problems with that beast
It has the 6.0L engine, and it blew up at about 120,000. Avoid the 6.0L it looks like lots of problems and gets 13 mpg
It goes through brake pads about every 17,000 miles...big vehicle and tiny pads
I have spent at least $k on the air ride suspension.
No problems with the transmission.

You should be able to use the EPA numbers (fueleconomy.gov) to do the math and figure out if you can meet your target.

Thanks, I calculated it and honestly $100 a week doesnt sound too shabby. Considering a full tank is ~300 miles and I plan on driving about ~220 a week. I even used the worst fuel economy stated and still came out to budget. Sounds good! Haha even in my 03 Honda Civic I was spending $150 every 2 weeks on gas. Now I guess it'll just be $200 every 2 weeks! Thanks.

If fuel mileage is your main concern, maybe a V8 Chevrolet Tahoe is the wrong choice of vehicle. Maybe a Toyota Prius that has not had one pervious Uber employed owner might be a wiser choice.

Yeah you are right, but I need trunk space and power to make it up a fat hill. The prius, like my honda civic, will almost roll backward pushing 4,000+ rpm's for over 1 hour.

I had a 1999 Tahoe. Thing was a tank. And it drank gas like one too.

I would not recommend commuting in one.

Yes but you still went places, no?

Sure. I had a 5 mile commute though. It was dependable, as long as I kept a gas line in the tank and fuel pumps in the back. They had known problems with those and as they go out they whine like crazy.

I used an online calculator and got upwards of $250 per month. If commuting, I would get something else. Maybe downgrade to something a bit smaller. Like a 3row Highlander/Pilot, where you can put the back seats down and get enough room.

With everything else being same, the Highlander from era will save you %30 on gas. There is also a newer Prius V that is a hybrid station wagon.

I think I spent $400 a week on gas for my 03 Honda Civic cuz I drove it out of this planet. Definitely drive a lot less now and thinking $250+ a month aint too shabby for the capabilities of the vehicle but will keep that in  mind!
