Hi Scotty! We're in TN and bought a van from northern IL. It's only 4 years old, but I'm concerned that all the road salt has jeopardized the underside, as there is definitely some surface rust on metal parts. Should I be concerned, and is there anything I can do to prevent deterioration?
Thanks, and welcome to TN!

Gary, check out a product called Fluid Film, you can get it by the gallon and spray it all over the underside (even into frame/unibody openings) of the vehicle to keep rust away. It's very popular on the snow plow forum.
On an only 4 year old vehicle I doubt anything is compromised already due to rust.
Another option would be to prime/paint rusty spots since you will probably not get much additional rust in TN (I got my F-150 from Tenn, 16 years old and nearly zero rust).

Thank you! I'll look into the spray for sure. Surely you wouldn't apply that over existing surface rust, if it's there? But maybe 🙂

You can spray Fluid Flim all over the underside! Paint, rust, you name it! Also great for door hinges, battery terminals. It really stays on whatever you spray it on and gets into tight areas.

Surface rust is pretty normal. When it eats through and you start seeing daylight through the holes then yes it's time to worry.
The best thing you can do to prevent deterioration is wash, wash , wash
